Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
March 31, 2017

105.3 The Pro KINB Kingfisher Oklahoma City Perry BroadcastingAfter ten years in the Last Bastion Divestiture Trust from the Citadel Broadcasting purchase of ABC Radio, Cumulus Media has sold Sports “105.3 The Pro” KINB Kingfisher/Oklahoma City OK to Perry Media Group for $225,000. Perry owns Urban AC “Heart & Soul 92.1” 1140 KRMP/92.1 K221FQ Oklahoma City and Urban “Power 103.5” KVSP Anadarko in the market.

Following the sale of its two other Houma LA stations to Lisa Stiglets and Elizabeth McQueen’s JLE, Inc earlier this month, My Home Team Media has sold Classic Rock “LA 106.3” KXOR-FM Thibodaux to Educational Media Foundation for $525,000. EMF will flip the station to its “K-Love” Christian AC network.

After the stations it leases were sold to Twin Islands Media Group in February, GSB Broadcasting sells Variety Hits “92.5 CTG” WICO-FM Pocomoke City/Salisbury MD to The Bridge of Hope for $250,000. WICO-FM will flip to a simulcast of Christian AC “88.7 The Bridge” WKNZ Harrington DE on Sunday, April 2 via Time Brokerage Agreement.

Jerry Papenfuss is selling Oldies 1560 KBEW, Country 98.1 KBEW-FM Blue Earth MN and Country 1580 KDOM/94.3 KDOM-FM Windom MN to Riverfront Broadcasting for $2.25 million.

Dale Ganske’s L. Topaz Enterprises sells the Construction Permit for 1540 KENT Enterprise/Las Vegas NV to El Sembrador Ministries for $125,000. El Sembrador will also gain a four year lease to operate 99.5 K258CZ Big Pine CA, which holds a CP to relocate to 96.7 in Las Vegas. El Sembrador operates a network of Spanish Christian stations in Southern California and Chicago.

Colorado College acquires Silent 89.5 KILE-FM Woodland Park CO from Grace Public Radio for $24,000. KILE-FM will become part of the Public News/Talk network based at 91.5 KRCC Colorado Springs.

Iglesia Pentecostes El Lirio de Los Valles purchases Living Proof’s 88.5 KWTW Bishop, 91.9 KWTD Ridgecrest, 95.7 K239AZ Lake Isabella CA, and 105.9 K290AO Tonopah NV for $100,000.

I’m glad that Cumulus finally sold KINB 105.3 FM. This leaves KOKY 102.1 FM and KPZK-FM 102.5 FM, both in Little Rock, AR as the only stations in the trust. I could see Perry Broadcasting go after those stations, and possibly acquire the KPZK 1250 AM/KIPR 92.3 FM simulcast pair from Cumulus.

The question is what format will Perry do on 105.3? Will it simulcast KRMP on that frequency with an addition to 92.1 (Unless something is happening to that frequency where it will shut down in order for another full power station close by to upgrade) and change 1140 to something else or will they sell the station? Or will they continue to do Sports and a whole different format catering to the coverage area. I don’t understand why they buy stations that don’t cover metro cities like OKC very well and are not upgradable.

Because the un-upgradeable [sic] ones are the cheapest to buy. Every other company has all the prized full-market signals locked up.

To answer your first question, I imagine 105.3 will be simulcasting KRMP shortly.

We don’t know yet though. I bet the next move will be that Perry Broadcasting would acquire the stations in the Little Rock market that are in the trust in addition to a simulcast pair from Cumulus, and launch a new format on the AM frequency with a translator.

If I were a betting guy, I’d bet it won’t. Perry is too cheap to pay what Cumulus wants for KOKY, let alone for it and KIPR. KOKY was always the challenge to divest from the Last Bastion Trust because it does well enough to command a premium price, but no one is willing to pay as much because everyone knows Cumulus has to get rid of it.

The most likely way for that stalemate to be broken will be someone like High Plains stepping in and buying 102.1 and 102.5 for stick value including a translator. KOKY would then move to 1250 and the translator.

Keep in mind that Cumulus and Entercom will likely be swapping stations in the near future. It seems possible, though maybe still not likely, that Cumulus could throw in a few Little Rock stations to make a swap even since it’s not going to want to pay cash.

Also, why would Perry buy KIPR/KPZK from Cumulus? If anything, the AM and the two in the trust would be sold off, but there’s no point in selling off your money making urban station.

The thing is both 103.5 & 105.3’s signals rimshot on the west side of OKC. If they want to cover the whole market they need a signal that will cover the east part of the city.
