KSAN’s Steven Seaweed To End 44 Year Radio Career

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
May 10, 2017

Dominic Zakk Zaccagnini KSAN San Francisco 107.7 The BoneCumulus Classic Rock “107.7 The Bone” KSAN San Mateo/San Francisco has announced that midday host Steven Seaweed will retire from broadcasting on June 30.

Ending a 44 year career, Seaweed will end his run with a “Bone-Voyage Cruise” for winning listeners, guests and station staffers. Seaweed has been with the current incarnation of KSAN since its launch in 1997. His radio career started at 101.7 KLRB Carmel in 1972, where he stayed until joining the original incarnation of KSAN on 94.9 San Francisco from 1978 through its 1980 flip to Country. He then spent time at 94.5 KFAT and KWSS Gilroy, “97.3 The Rocker” KRQR and “Alice 97.3” KLLC before joining The Bone.

Cumulus Media announces that Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame DJ and The Bone 107.7/KSAN-FM midday personality, Steven Seaweed, will retire after 44 years on-air. Seaweed’s farewell broadcast will be on June 30, 2017, from 10am-3pm on The Bone 107.7.

Seaweed has been a staple of Bay Area Rock radio since his debut on KLRB-FM in Carmel, CA, on New Year’s Eve, 1972. After six years with the station, Seaweed joined KSAN-FM (then known as “The Jive 95”), where he did weekends on the freeform progressive rock station through its format change to Country in November 1980. He moved on to on-air positions at Bay Area stations including: KFAT-FM (“The Wide Spot On the Dial”), KWSS-FM, KRQR-FM (The Rocker”) and KLLC-FM (“[email protected]), before rejoining KSAN in 1997, his station home for the last 20 years.

Seaweed will be feted by his station colleagues, listeners, and Rock royalty, who will celebrate Seaweed’s significant contributions to the Bay Area’s rich Rock history with special on-air guests and farewell stops through June 30. 107.7 The Bone will send Seaweed off to his retirement in style; fittingly celebrating his brilliant career at sea, on a June “Bone-Voyage Cruise” for winning listeners, guests and station staff. More details will be announced on 107.7 The Bone.

Justin Wittmayer, Vice President/Market Manager, Cumulus Media-San Francisco, said: “I’d like to thank Steven for his contributions to Bay Area Radio over the past 44 years. He left his mark on many radio stations and will forever be a part of the KSAN family. Steven has an open invitation to DJ the (commercial free) New Year’s Eve overnight shift anytime he’d like…I encourage his fans to make that happen! @stevenseaweed”

Dominic “Zakk” Zaccagnini, KSAN-FM Program Director, said: “It’s been a professional thrill to work alongside the “Weedman” in the hallways and follow him each weekday on the air at The Bone. He will be forever be part of the KSAN family.”

Seaweed said: “”44 years ago, nobody wanted to work at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Except me! I volunteered, got the job, and went on to have the most rewarding career in Radio. I have been so lucky all these years to have worked with the most incredible people, at many legendary Radio stations, and with the best Radio listeners on the planet. Thank you, everybody!”
