While some of the day 3 markets showed the same spoken word gains as the markets in Day 1 and Day 2, there were a few markets in today’s releases that looked fairly “normal”.
For example there was very little growth from News/Talk in Las Vegas, while Orlando and San Antonio same declines. Most of the latter two markets can be tied to socio-political motives in those states as opposed to the northern markets where coronavirus hit earlier and their political leaders were more aggressive towards it. Cox Classic Hits 101.1 KONO-FM retained its market lead in San Antonio with a 6.8 to 7.3 rise. iHeartMedia’s News/Talk 1200 WOAI fell 6.3 to 5.8, while Public News/Talk 89.1 KSTX dropped 3.4 to 3.2.
In Orlando, Entercom Classic Hits “105.9 Sunny-FM” WOCL retained its market lead with an 8.4 to 8.2 drop. Cox Media R&B “Star 94.5” WCFB surged to second with a massive 5.0 to 6.9 gain. While iHeartMedia Hot Talk “Real Radio 104.1” WTKS-FM rose 4.4 to 5.1, Cox News/Talk 96.5 WDBO-FM slid 4.6 to 4.1, iHeart Conservative Talk 540 WFLF dropped 3.3 to 2.8, and Public News/Talk 90.7 WMFE rose 3.2 to 3.3.
Las Vegas saw sizable gains for Christian AC 90.5 KSOS as it trended 3.1 – 4.2 – 4.7 and Beasley’s “102.7 Coyote Country” KCYE with a 2.8 – 3.3 – 4.1 gain. Spoken word did show some growth as Public News/Talk 88.9 KNPR rose 2.6 to 3.1 and Beasley’s Conservative Talk 720/101.5 KDWN rose 1.7 to 2.1, while Entercom’s 840 KXNT held steady at a 2.1 share.
Portland was a market where the shift to News based programming was most pronounced. Public News/Talk 91.5 KOPB-FM jumped to the market lead with an 8.2 to 9.9 rise, while its stream added an additional 0.9 share. Alpha Media News/Talk 101.1 KXL-FM surged from a 4.9 to 6.7 giving what ratings expert Chris Huff notes was the brand’s highest share since 1996 (when it was on 750). You also see the drop in at-work oriented music stations as iHeartMedia AC “K103” KKCW slid 8.4 to 7.1 and Classic Hits “106.7 The Eagle” KLTH dropped 6.1 to 5.1.
It was a Country music dominating monthly in Kansas City. Steel City’s 94.1 KFKF jumped into second in the market with a 5.9 to 8.2 gain. Entercom’s “106.5 The Wolf” WDAF-FM rose 4.8 to 5.7 and Steel City’s “Q104” KBEQ was up 4.7 to 5.3. Entercom News/Talk 98.1 KMBZ-FM rose 5.3 to 5.8, while bigger gains went to Public News/Talk 89.3 KCUR with a 4.1 to 4.8 rise and Entercom’s Conservative Talk 980 KMBZ up 2.3 to 3.1.
Huff notes that Entercom Classic Rock 98.5 WNCX Cleveland rose to its highest share ever to take the market lead with an 8.0 to 9.1 gain. News/Talk 1100 WTAM was up 5.8 to 7.2, while Public News/Talk 90.3 WCPN rose 4.4 to 5.2.
Big News/Talk gains were also seen at iHeartMedia’s 1530/92.5 KFBK Sacramento (8.4 to 10.3), 700 WLW Cincinnati (8.3 – 10.1), and 610 WTVN Columbus (8.6 to 9.4). Bonneville’s 1160/102.7 KSL Salt Lake City was up 4.9 to 6.0. Entercom’s 1110/99.3 WBT Charlotte hit its highest PPM share with a 5.3 to 5.7 gain, while co-owned 1020 KDKA Pittsburgh surged 4.3 to 5.6.
iHeartMedia Country “Big 104.7” WPGB Pittsburgh had a big 3.1 to 4.3 gain, but still trailed Entercom’s “Y108” WDSY’s 4.9 share.
The biggest slide of the month went to iHeartMedia Alternative “106.5 The End” WEND Charlotte with a 4.3 to 2.6 drop.
