ESPN 630 Washington To Carry University of Virginia Football & Men’s Basketball

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
July 20, 2020

ESPN 630 WMAL 105.9 WMAL-FM Washington DC Redskins WSBNCumulus Media Sports “ESPN 630 The Sports Capitol” WSBN Washington DC has announced it has joined the Virginia Sports Radio Network.

WSBN will carry all University of Virginia football and men’s basketball games in addition to the local “Coaches Corner” shows featuring football coach Bronco Mendenhall and head men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett.

The station replaces Salem Media’s “570 The Answer” WWRC Bethesda MD as the Washington DC affiliate for the University of Virginia.

Virginia Sports Properties general manager Brad Ferrell announced today the addition of AM 630 WSBN (ESPN 630 AM) in Washington, D.C. to the Virginia Sports Radio Network. The station is known in the market as “The Sports Capitol.”

“Adding The Sports Capitol to our network gives us a much greater presence and reach in one of our strongest markets,” Ferrell said. “This area is home to one of our largest concentration of Virginia fans and we are excited to establish this relationship and provide greater coverage to the Cavalier athletics programs in the Washington, D.C. metro market.”

The station is owned and operated by Cumulus Media. It is one of the oldest radio stations in the Washington media market, continuously on the air from 1925. In July of 2019, the station became the ESPN affiliate for the Washington, D.C. market. Its programming includes a mix of network and local sports shows.

“We are thrilled to be the Washington D.C. area’s home for all the University of Virginia’s football and men’s basketball games,” said Jake McCann, vice president/market manager for Cumulus Media. “The school has a great tradition of excellence in athletics and in the classroom. There are many alumni in the area who will be delighted to hear the games as well as exclusive content we will be providing on ESPN 630-The Sports Capitol.”

In addition to carry live play-by-play of Virginia football and men’s basketball broadcast, the weekly Coaches Corner programs with head football coach Bronco Mendenhall and head men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett will air on ESPN 630 AM.
