The story of the November monthlies continues to be the jumps by many News/Talkers ahead of the election. Four stations in particular made noticeable jumps this month.
It is very rare for a heritage 50kW clear channel AM frequency to have never led its market. Chris Huff notes that iHeartMedia News/Talk 1200 WOAI San Antonio was one of those to have never led the market in the history of measurement by Arbitron and Nielsen dating back to 1966. That ended today as the station rose from a 6.3 to 7.7 share to tie Cox Classic Hits 101.1 KONO-FM atop the market.
Last month iHeartMedia’s 570 KNRS/105.7 KNRS-FM Salt Lake City led the market for the first time ever with a 7.6 share, which was a record for either frequency. This month it rises to a 9.5 share to shatter that record.
A pair of Public News/Talkers set station records this month. 89.3 KCUR Kansas City rose from 4.2 to 5.2, while 89.7 WOSU-FM Columbus surged from a 5.2 to 6.9 share.
Public News/Talk 91.5 KOPB-FM Portland takes the #1 spot back in the market with a 7.6 to 8.3 gain. iHeartMedia AC “K103” KKCW falls to second 8.4 – 8.2, while Alpha Media News/Talk holds in third at a 7.0.
Trending upwards in Portland are iHeartMedia Conservative Talk 1190 KEX (3.1 – 3.2 – 3.7) and Alpha Media AAA 101.9 KINK (2.9 – 3.0 – 3.4). Trending downward is Alpha Media CHR “Live 95.5” KBFF (3.2 – 2.7 – 2.5).
iHeartMedia Classic Rock “99.7 The Fox” WRFX continues to lead Charlotte with a 7.9 to 7.5 move. Entercom (now Radio One) News/Talk 1110 WBT/99.3 WBT-FM rises to second 6.9 to 7.4 with what Huff notes is its largest share since 1995. iHeartMedia Country “96.9 The Kat” WKKT jumps to third 6.4 to 7.4, Beasley Country 103.7 WSOC follows right behind steady at a 7.3.

While we noted yesterday that Entercom Alternative “107.7 The End” KNDD Seattle has trended downward 3.9 to 3.2 to 2.3 since the company’s format restructuring. However, two of the company’s stations today have shown significant gains. “Alt 94.7” KKDO Sacramento followed the move from a jockless presentation to rise 2.4 to 3.6. The rebranding of “96.5 The Buzz” KRBZ Kansas City to “Alt 96.5” has the station rise 2.1 – 2.7 – 3.1.
iHeartMedia News/Talk 1530 KFBK/93.1 KFBK-FM leads Sacramento with an 8.1 – 8.5 – 9.1 trend. Bonneville Country 105.1 KNCI rises 7.5 to 8.1, while Entercom Classic Rock “Eagle 96.9” KSEG rebounds 7.2 to 7.7.
Trending downward in Sacramento is iHeartMedia Soft AC “92.5 The Breeze” KBEB 6.5 – 4.3 – 3.8.
Capitol Broadcasting AC “Now 97.9” KBZN Salt Lake City is trending down 6.3 – 5.9 – 4.4.
The undefeated start for the Pittsburgh Steelers helps iHeartMedia Rock 102.5 WDVE rise 10.6 to 11.3 for what Huff notes is its highest share since November 2010. It also helps Entercom Sports “93.7 The Fan” KDKA-FM move up 5.3 – 6.2 – 6.4.
It was not a good month for Country in Pittsburgh as iHeartMedia’s “Big 104.7” WPGB slides 5.3 to 3.8 and Entercom’s “Y108” WDSY continues to slide 5.1 – 4.5 – 4.1. Public News/Talk 90.5 WESA was one of the few to not rise as it slides 4.8 to 3.9.
Lots of movement in Las Vegas. Beasley Classic Hits 96.3 KKLZ stays in the lead with a 7.3 to 6.1 drop. iHeartMedia AC “Sunny 106.5” KSNE drops 6.8 to 5.6. Both Hot AC’s see gains as Entercom’s “Mix 94.1” KMXB moves to fourth 4.7 to 5.2 and Beasley’s “Star 107.9” KVGS jumps 4.0 to 5.0. Huff notes that is a station record for KVGS.

Cumulus Media’s combo of Classic Rock “101 The Fox” KCFX (7.9 – 7.4) and Classic Hits 94.9 KCMO-FM (6.3 – 6.7) continue to lead Kansas City. Entercom Country “106.5 The Wolf” WDAF-FM rides the NFL’s Chiefs to a 5.6 to 6.5 gain.
Also trending up in Kansas City are Entercom News/Talk 98.1 KMBZ-FM (4.5 – 5.0 – 5.7) and Cumulus Adult R&B “Magic 107.3” KMJK (2.9 – 3.2 – 4.8). Continuing its downward slide is Entercom Hot AC “99.7 The Point” KZPT (7.2 – 3.0 – 2.7).
iHeartMedia News/Talk 610 WTVN Columbus finishes atop the market for the first time since January 2012 with a 9.2 to 9.1 drop. iHeartMedia Country 92.3 WCOL falls to second 9.3 to 8.2.
In its final month as Classic Rock “105.7 The Brew“, WXZX Columbus goes out with a 0.8 share. Alternative “CD 102.5” WWCD does not subscribe to Nielsen.
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, Day 4 will be released on Monday, November 30.

WOAI needs a translator. It’s funny 107.1 in San Antonio, which is another news talk station’s translator, doesn’t top the market.
