WRUF Breeding A Gator

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
October 15, 2010

Rock 104 WRUF Country 103.7 Gator University Florida Gainesville

Update 10/15: “Rock 104” made its flip to “103.7 The Gator” at 11am today. Listen to the changeover at FormatChange.com. The first hour of music consisted of:

Easton Corbin – Roll With It
Toby Keith – As Good As I Once Was
Luke Bryan – Do I
Zac Brown Band – Toes
Trace Adkins – This Ain’t No Love Song
Brad Paisley – Online
Rascal Flatts – Why Wait
Blake Shelton – All About Tonight
David Lee Murphy – Dust On The Bottle
George Strait – The Breath You Take
Craig Morgan – Bonfire
Justin Moore – How I Got To Be This Way
Zac Brown – Highway 20 Ride
Eric Church – Smoke A Little Smoke

Meanwhile, syndicated morning hosts Lex & Terry will slide across town from WRUF to Pamal’s “100.5 The Buzz” WHHZ.

Update 10/11: The University of Florida has confirmed our report. WRUF will flip to Country as “103.7 The Gator” this coming weekend, with the “Rock 104” programming moving online. Randy Wright, manager of the school’s media properties, explains the reasoning for the flip to “to attract a broader audience and help ensure the economic viability of the media properties for decades to come.” More info from the Gainesville Sun.

Original Report 10/9: There aren’t many University owned commercial radio stations nationwide, Brown University’s 95.5 WBRU Providence, RI is one, The University of Florida’s “Rock 104” 103.7 WRUF-FM Gainesville is another. For almost 30 years, WRUF has been the primary current rock outlet in North Central Florida. That appears to be about to change.

The University of Florida registered Country1037.com, 1037TheGator.com, and Country1037TheGator.com on Friday. The Gainesville Sun reported in September that the station’s contract to air the syndicated Lex & Terry morning show expires on October 16. The remainder of the station’s hosts are considered interns from the University student body.

The University of Florida also operates Non-Commercial NPR/Talk 89.1 WUFT/90.1 WJUF and Commercial Sports 850 WRUF in the Gainesville/Ocala market. A flip to Country will place WRUF-FM in direct competition with market leading “K-Country 93.7” WOGK and “Thunder Country 102.3” WTRS.
