Clear Channel Proposing Carolina Signal Shuffle

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
August 8, 2012

Rock 104.9 WQNS 105.1 Asheville Shine 96.7 104.9 WROO Greenville WNGA ClermontA pair of Clear Channel stations in the Carolinas have proposed frequency moves pending the approval of a third application to increase power in Georgia.

Clear Channel’s “Rock 104.9” WQNS Waynesville, NC would relocate about 25 miles east to a new tower located at the studio complex for Clear Channel Asheville improving coverage of Asheville proper. If approved, the station would change city of license to Woodfin, NC with a frequency change to 105.1. It would operate with 5.3kW at 62 meters.

Christian AC “Shine 96.7” WROO Maudlin, SC serving greater Greenville would move to 104.9. The station would continue to operate from its current location with power increasing from 700 to 720 watts at 288 meters. As part of WROO’s application, Clear Channel is asking the FCC to reclassify CBS’ 104.7 WKQC Charlotte from Class C to C0 with no changes to its facilities and Golden Corners Broadcasting’s Sports “104.9 The Drive” WCCP-FM Clemson, SC to relocate to 105.5.

Both of those moves are contingent on the approval of an application to upgrade Tugart Properties’ 105.1 WNGA Clermont, GA. That station which had been Country “Georgia 105.1” until going dark last summer, has just seen an identical CP expire which would have increased the station from a Class A operating with 1.7 kW at 187 meters to a C3 operating with 7kW.
