With exactly two weeks left until Christmas, Entercom Hot AC “Star 94.1” WSTR Smyrna/Atlanta has made a late season move to Christmas Music.
The station began positioning as “The Christmas Station” with nothing but holiday hits at 7am this morning. Salem Media Christian AC “104.7 The Fish” WFSH-FM Athens has served as the only All-Christmas station in Atlanta so far this season and in recent years has surged to the top of the market’s ratings each Holiday monthly. Using Christmas music on WSTR to cut into WFSH-FM could be part of the strategy here.
Will this move lead into a musical shift at “Star 94.1“? WSTR currently ranks sixteenth in the Atlanta market with a 2.7 share in a crowded pop music market that includes two CHRs and a hotter leaning AC. With Cox’s “97.1 The River” WSRV trying to straddle the line between Classic Hits and Classic Rock, could Entercom take WSTR in a more traditional Classic Hits presentation?
Odd that their HD2 is also Christmas music too… Except commercial free….
Interestingly the station just celebrated its 30th anniversary as Star 94(.1) barely a month ago. If they flip to Classic Hits, maybe they bring back the WQXI-FM calls and “94Q” moniker?
