June 11, 2025

Big 100.3 WBIG-FM WashingtoniHeartMedia Classic Rock “Big 100.3” WBIG-FM has agreed to an extension of its broadcast rights deal with the NFL’s Washington Commanders.

The Commanders had moved to WBIG-FM in 2022 after previously airing simultaneously on Audacy Sports 980 WTEM and Cumulus Media’s pair of Conservative Talk 105.9 WMAL and Sports “ESPN 630” WSPZ. WBIG-FM will continue as home for all of the franchise’s gameday broadcasts with additional content and events across the iHeart Washington cluster.

iHeartMedia Washington Region President Aaron Hyland said, “We are thrilled to extend our dynamic audio partnership with the Washington Commanders, building on the momentum and shared success we’ve achieved together the past 3 seasons. By harnessing the power of audio across BIG 100 and our iHeartMedia platforms with broadcast, podcast, and streaming, we’re excited to deliver even more access, energy, and unforgettable gameday moments to Commanders fans throughout the region.”

Commanders Chief Partnerships Officer Jim Ruston said, “Extending our partnership with iHeartMedia D.C. is an exciting step toward the future we’re building for Commanders fans. Together, we’re not only delivering dynamic gameday coverage — we’re laying the groundwork for even more innovative programming that will deepen our connection to the community and expand our engagement with our valued fans.”

That’s great! There’s just one little problem that this particular station has, that the other classic rock stations that air football games don’t. There is no local anchor now on this radio station, no sense of place, no personalities left on that station, that can leverage that partnership in a way to interest and gain new fans. Sure, the rest of that cluster is amazing, and there’s a lot of opportunity there, but the games are essentially running on classic rock premium choice. I really hope that changes at least with a morning addition in the next few months. I get the station was never really a priority, but you think this sort of makes it one.
