Z93 & 101.5 The Fridge Are Eaton Dayton Alive

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
October 2, 2025

Z93 WGTZ Eaton Dayton AliveConnoisseur Media completed its stunting and launched two new brands in Dayton at 5pm today.

92.9 WGTZ Eaton returned to its heritage “Z93” identity with a Classic Hits format. 101.5 WCLI-FM Enon flipped to Alternative “101.5 The Fridge“.

The newly relaunched “Z93” will feature Scott Sharp in mornings. Sharp was the final voice heard on the original version of the station in 2007 where he spent a decade rising from morning show producer to APD/MD to PD/afternoon host. Kim Faris, who co-hosted mornings on WGTZ from 1984 until 2002 and then hosted middays for four years, will come out of retirement to host afternoons. She most recently hosted afternoons on Hot AC “Mix 107.7” WMMX from 2016 until 2021.

Joel Murphy, PD of Hot AC “Mix 94.1” WHBC-FM Canton will add PD duties for WGTZ. He said, “We’ll be playing all the songs and artists that helped make Z93 famous. The best stuff from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Listeners can expect to hear classic pop and top 40 with artists like Prince, Micheal Jackson, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston.”

The relaunched brand debuted with a montage paying tribute to the original iteration of the station with its infamous Mitch Craig voiced “WGTZ Eaton, Dayton and Springfield Alive” ID leading into C&C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)”, N’Sync “Bye Bye Bye”, and Bon Jovi “Living On A Prayer”.

101.5 The Fridge WCLI-FM DaytonThe new “101.5 The Fridge” will feature cluster APD Gerald ‘JJ Hooper’ II in mornings, PD Kevin Begley in middays, and “106.3 The Core” WGER Saginaw MI midday host ‘Kenzie’ in afternoons. Begley, who programs Hot AC “Star 99.9” WEZN Bridgeport CT and serves as the company’s Hot AC format coordinator, commented, “Alternative has been missing from Dayton for way too long, and that ends now. 101.5 The Fridge is here to give the music, and the fans, the home they deserve. This is the soundtrack of a generation, back on the radio where it belongs. The Fridge isn’t just a name, it’s a signal that alternative in Dayton is alive, loud, and impossible to ignore. We may not have been able to get Frigidaire to come back to Dayton… but we did bring back alternative radio. Get ready Dayton, The Fridge is fully stocked.”

The Fridge debuted with My Chemical Romance “Welcome To The Black Parade”, Green Day “Welcome To Paradise”, and Foo Fighters “Today’s Song”.

Market Manager Brett Beshore said, “Z93 was a powerhouse in Dayton, and we’re thrilled to bring it back for a new era. By reuniting popular voices like Scott Sharp, and Dayton’s most iconic personality Kim Farris, with a high-energy presentation, we’re delivering a station that feels both legendary and fresh, something completely unique in today’s radio landscape. Listeners will experience a station that sounds like nothing else on the air today. Z93, Eaton, Dayton and Springfield ALIVE!” He continued, “With 101.5 The Fridge, we’re giving Dayton the coolest alternative rock station it’s ever had. The name pays tribute to the city’s proud Frigidaire heritage, while the format delivers a bold, modern sound that will stand out and connect with listeners and advertisers across the market.”

Operations Manager Kevin J. Washington said, “It’s truly an honor to help bring Z93 back to Dayton! The station meant so much to me back in the day when I was an intern. To be part of its return is a full circle moment. 101.5 The Fridge is going to bring a fresh,
energetic sound to Dayton with jocks to match!”

Original Report 10/1: Connoisseur Media pulled the plug on Variety Hits “92.9 Jack-FM” WGTZ Eaton/Dayton OH at 5pm on Tuesday, while Classic Country “101.5 Hank-FM” WCLI-FM Enon followed into stunt mode a few minutes later.

WGTZ is currently running a loop of Ray Charles “Hit The Road Jack” interspersed with announcements from VP/General Manager Brett Beshore teasing the new brand to launch on Thursday, October 2 at 5pm. The promos tease something “fresh and bold” and to “get ready to love your radio again”. It is promoting its next phase online with an image of Zebra facts noting “The Zebra Migration” taking place on 10/2.

WGTZ, which has been “Jack-FM” since September 2017, registered a 2.3 share in the August 2025 Nielsen Audio ratings.

101.5 Hank-FM WCLI-FM DaytonMeanwhile WCLI-FM is playing a broad group of songs about food or drink featuring the likes of Rihanna “Birthday Cake”, Rolling Stones “Brown Sugar”, Zac Brown Band “Chicken Fried”, Weird Al “Eat It”, Smashing Pumpkins “Mayonaise”, Little Richard “Tutti Frutti”, and Jimmy Buffet “Cheeseburger In Paradise”.

An image on the Hank-FM website shows a refrigerator with the tease “Your Musical Diet Is About To Change”. Launched in October 2014, “101.5 Hank-FM” registered just a 1.2 share in the August Nielsen ratings.

It’s about time! WGTZ was the worst iteration of “Jack-FM” I’ve heard. The positioning and the music (trying to compete with WTUE) didn’t mesh at all. I only hope they go back to the “Z-93 is WGTZ, Eaton Dayton-Springfield alive!” ID. And I hope Jeff Warshaw pops for some decent LOCAL jocks with LOCAL content, unlike iHeart.

WGTZ, like all “Jack-FM” stations not owned by Audacy, iHeart, or Midwest Communications, ran the national version of the format. Same music logs and imaging.

Yeah yeah this is all great, but what we really need to know is how long between Joel being named program Director was there until the reverb was put on the air chain. once a radio guy, always a radio guy, heard it over the air on mixin Canton when I was there recently. Enough to notice, but not too much to where it’s indulgent. Love it
