The X 106.1 Seeks To Fill Houston’s Variety Spot

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
September 3, 2026

The X 106.1 K291CE 880 KJOZ HoustonTrying to fill the opening created by Audacy’s recent flip of “95.7 The Spot” KKHH Houston to Sports, Hector Guevara Ministry Corp’s KJOZ Conroe and Primera Iglesia Evangelica de Apostoles Y Profetas’s 106.1 K291CE Houston flipped to Variety “The X 106.1” on Monday, August 31.

Playing off the idea that “X marks the Spot”, the station is positioning as both “The Best of the 80s, 90s and Today” and “We Play Everything” featuring a broad library of music from the 1960s through 2010s. K291CE had most recently been “Tejano 106.1“, which has moved to the 99.5 duo of K258DA Houston and K258BZ Sugar Land now being fed by Radio One’s 97.9 KBXX-HD2.

Both KJOZ and K291CE were recently flagged by both Nielsen and the FCC improperly feeding programming. The FCC sent a violation notice to K291CE in August for not rebroadcasting their licensed primary station, while Nielsen flagged another translator in March for claiming it was rebroadcasting KJOZ when it was not. At the time, five different translators were listed on the FCC database as being originated by KJOZ, which is now legally feeding K291CE.

The 2pm hour today featured:

  • Wang Chung – Don’t Let Go
  • Elvis Presley – (Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame
  • Kings of Leon – Use Somebody
  • Cranberries – Zombie
  • Paula Abdul – Straight Up
  • Abba – Dancing Queen
  • Brandy & Monica – The Boy Is Mine
  • Mott The Hoople – All The Young Dudes
  • Elton John – I’m Still Standing
  • Pet Shop Boys ft. Dusty Springfield – What Have I Done To Deserve This
  • U2 – Vertigo
  • Def Leppard – Pour Some Sugar On Me
  • Earth, Wind & Fire – September
  • Nickelback – Rockstar
  • Michael Bolton – When A Man Loves A Woman

INSTANT INSIGHT:At multiple times in sampling we’ve heard many album versions of songs and some songs that were not even released domestically as singles including Atomic Kitten “Whole Again” and Snow Patrol “Shut Your Eyes”. Perhaps too much Variety, not enough Hits.

Lance, regarding your insight “Perhaps too much Variety, not enough Hits” – isn’t that why commercial music radio is spiraling down and has lost its cache with the youngest generations? If radio only slakes one’s thirst for the familiar, but does not introduce new product, then the compelling nature of the platform disappears. Music radio’s raison d’etre used to be breaking the hits, and the labels supported the medium for that purpose. I applaud The X 106.1 for pursuing a deep catalog approach, especially in a market that has long been known as one of USA’s most Europop and dance friendly regions.
