SDLocal, the operating partnership of Local Media San Diego and KFMB Stations, has named Garrett Michaels as Program Director for Hot AC “100.7 Jack-FM” KFMB-FM.
Michaels returns to the market where he spent a decade as PD of Alternative “91X” XETRA-FM. He most recently programmed Alternative “107.7 The End” KNDD Seattle and also worked at defunct “Y100” WPLY Philadelphia and “96.3 The Planet” WPLT Detroit.
The bigger story may be one left on the last line of the press release where General Manager Greg Wolfson teases a new format for KFMB-FM, which is currently playing Christmas Music for the holiday season.
Veteran radio programmer and air personality Garett Michaels is named Program Director at Hot AC KFMB-FM/San Diego. Michaels’ San Diego radio roots date back to 2002 as the original and founding Program Director of KBZT-FM, a position he held for nearly a decade. He most recently spent two years as the Program Director of KNDD-FM (107.7 The End)/Seattle.
“After spending the last few months exploring my strategic options, I couldn’t be more excited to return to San Diego,” said Michaels. “It’s an honor to be a part of KFMB, call letters that have such an important history and heritage here. Also, I’m stoked to be working with the legendary Dave, Shelley and Chainsaw, San Diego’s best and highest rated morning show. A huge thanks to Elisabeth Kimmel for making this possible.”
“We welcome Garett back home to San Diego,” said SDLocal VP/General Manager Gregg Wolfson. “With his large market experience, knowledge of San Diego, and his proficiency in CHR, AC, Alternative, Triple A, Rock, and Country, he is the perfect fit for the future format of KFMB-FM.”
Unlike the majority of the Jack-FM branded stations, KFMB-FM is a personality oriented Hot AC with the Dave Shelley and Chainsaw morning show and a custom version of the syndicated John Jay and Rich morning show in afternoons.
The SDLocal group consists of KFMB Stations’ KFMB-FM and News/Talk 760 KFMB and Local Media San Diego’s CHR “Z90.3” XHTZ, Alternative “91X” XETRA-FM, and Rhythmic Oldies “Magic 92.5” XHRM.
Hit the road “Jack,” cause you won’t be coming back no more…
We have three top 40 and 2 Alternative stations in San Diego… Some variety would be nice. I’m worried that Michaels’ background hints at another Alternative?
Could KFMB-FM be looking at AAA? After KPRI’s unfortunate demise, could 102.1’s old format be on 100.7 in 2016? I love listening to FM/94.9 but I hope to see Adult Rock back in SD
Well, it is (now) not a format heard in SD. If you partner that with 91X, that may grab older listeners that grew up with them.
This article theorizes that the likeliest new format would be mainstream/Classic Rock–both to compete more with KGB, and to be more compatible with DSC…
