Update 8/15: Clear Channel launched Classic Rock “Rock 94.9” W235BS Birmingham this afternoon.
Resurrecting the format and identity previously heard on Cumulus’ 99.5 WZRR until its flip in January 2012, the launch happens to come on the same day that station drops the CHR format that replaced it.
Original Report 8/11: The late Classic Rock “Rock 99” WZRR format is coming back to Birmingham.
On Friday we were e-mailed a promotional video hyping the launch of “Rock 94.9” with the former WZRR airstaff in tow. The video has been making its way around social media as well. Former WZRR Program Director Jason Mack is already in the Clear Channel fold programming Active Rock “103.1 The Vulcan” W276BQ and Gospel “Hallelujah 105.1” W286BK. The other staffers mentioned are the syndicated John Boy & Billy morning show and middayer Lori Ray.
Clear Channel followed up by registering Rock949.com on Sunday. 94.9 would be Mark Snow’s 94.9 W235BS Birmingham which holds a CP to operate with 70 watts at 300 meters rebroadcasting Clear Channel’s 102.5 WDXB-HD2 from the tower of WDXB, 96.5 WMJJ, and 103.7 WQEN (Coverage Map).
Cumulus flipped “Rock 99.5” WZRR to CHR on January 1, 2012.
