iHeartMedia launched Urban “100.9 The Beat” W265DB/WKCI-HD2 at 12:00am last night.
Launching with 10,000 songs commercial-free, the station is promoting the pending debut of the syndicated Breakfast Club in mornings. The rest of the on-air lineup includes WBTJ Richmond’s Big Nat, WWPR New York’s Angie Martinez, and WJBT Jacksonville’s T-Roy.
Original Report 6/17: After having to relocate 102.1 W271BW Milbrook/New Haven, CT to a new frequency due to interference complaints from Saga’s WAQY Springfield, MA, iHeartMedia is pulling a do-over on the format of the translator.
W271BW launched in January as Classic Rock “Rock 102“, but when it returns on its new frequency as 100.9 W265DB it will do so as Urban “100.9 The Beat“. TheBeatNewHaven.com and BeatNewHaven.com were registered last week for the translator. From its new frequency, W265DB will operate with 250 watts vertical at 114 meters (Coverage Map). The Construction Permit for 100.9 was granted on Monday, and a quick build-out should follow.
An Urban launch would enable iHeart to target Connoisseur Media’s market leading Urban AC 94.3 WYBC-FM and potentially allow sister CHR “KC 101” 101.3 WKCI to overtake it for the market lead. In the Fall 2014 Nielsen Audio ratings, WYBC-FM held a 8.3 share of the New Haven market audience with WKCI right behind at a 7.9.
Will it cause interference to ROXY-FM in new London?
Looking at the W271BW coverage map at http://fccdata.org/?facid=139897, I doubt it.

Email response from a friend who listens to WYBC – “Very interesting I have always felt WYBC to be very stagnant, not very creative or risky that’s what happens when you stand still too long!”
Is there a wheel of formats they spin at IHeart once in awhile when it comes to translator?
Oh rock……well that happened lets try urban now. : /
