El Paso Community Foundation has entered into a Public Service Operating Agreement with University of Texas – El Paso to operate Public News/Talk 88.5 KTEP El Paso TX.

El Paso Community Foundation will manage staffing, programming, fundraising and general operation of the station with the University responsible for the license and transmitter site lease. The five year deal includes options to renew for two additional terms. EPCF also have an exclusive option to purchase KTEP within the first three years for $1 million. After that it will convert to a non-exclusive option with right of first refusal to purchase the station should UTEP seek to sell or donate the license.

EPCF President Eric Pearson told KTSM-TV, “The Foundation has committed itself to working closely with UTEP and I believe we can enhance the value such an important asset in the community. We appreciate the trust that UTEP and the UT Board of Regents have put in us.”

UTEP President Heather Wilson commented, “When federal funding for public radio went away, we started exploring how to keep this local service to the community in a way that is sustainable. We have a close partnership with the El Paso Community Foundation and, working together creatively, we believe we can keep local public broadcasting alive and well. We appreciate their willingness to work together.”
