Kirk McEwen Rejoins 98 Rock Baltimore For Afternoons

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
June 8, 2015

Kirk McEwen Sarah Fleischer Amelia 98 Rock WIYY BaltimoreAfter an nine year absence Kirk McEwen is returning to Hearst’s “98 Rock” 97.9 WIYY Baltimore for afternoons.

McEwen was part of the “Kirk & Mark” morning show with Mike “Mark” Ondayko from 1995 until exiting the station for CBS’ then Hot Talk “105.7 Free-FM” WHFS. After that station flipped to Sports, McEwen spent time in Washington, DC at Citadel’s “105.9 The Edge” WVRX and Tampa at CBS’ “98.7 The Fan” WHFS until Beasley took over and flipped it to Rock “Bubba 98.7” WBRN-FM.

His return to WIYY coincides with the retirement last Friday of Sarah Fleischer after 38 years (the last 27 of which were in middays). Current afternoon host Amelia moves to the 10am-3pm slot. McEwen will also host all Baltimore Ravens related ancillary programming on the team’s co-flagship station.

Popular radio personality Kirk McEwen is returning to Baltimore’s airwaves to host 98 Rock’s 3pm-7pm show. The move represents a homecoming for McEwen, who was the long time co-host of 98 Rock’s dominant morning show. McEwen will also take the lead in hosting 98 Rock’s Ravens-related programming.

“It feels like my last name was, From 98 Rock”, says McEwen. “Everywhere I go, people still say, ‘hey, aren’t you Kirk from 98 Rock?’ I couldn’t be more excited to come back to the station where I got my start! I’ve got a lot of pent up energy and I’m ready to unleash it on Baltimore.”

In a related move, veteran 98 Rock personality Amelia will move from her afternoon slot to the 10am-3pm Midday show vacated by the recent retirement of 38 year radio host, Sarah Fleischer.

98 Rock Program Director, Rick Strauss commented “We spoke with candidates from across the country. After searching far and wide, it became obvious that Amelia’s 14 year history with 98 Rock and her popularity with our listeners made her the clear choice to take over for Sarah.”

Cary Pahigian, President and General Manager of 98 Rock adds, “98 Rock has a history of creating a dynamic lineup of personalities that are uniquely Baltimore. Kirk joins Amelia, Justin, Scott and Spiegel and makes 98 Rock a true powerhouse of music, fun and football.”

98 Rock is the FM home of the Baltimore Ravens and is heard on 97.9FM, at 98online.com and on the 98 Rock mobile app.
