CD101 Columbus Changing Frequencies?

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
June 30, 2010

Update 6/30/10: “CD101” will begin simulcasting on 102.5 tonight at midnight as it begins its move to its new permanent home.

WOSU Public Media, the broadcasting arm of The Ohio State University, has acquired the 101.1 signal from Fun With Radio, LLC for $4.8 Million. Following the closing of the sale in September or October, 101.1 will flip to non-commercial Classical while 89.7 WOSU-FM will flip to all NPR News/Talk in a simulcast with 820 WOSU.

102.5 will gain the WWCD calls and all of CD101’s intellectual property, including its status as flagship for Columbus Blue Jackets hockey. The station will at least initially be branded as “CD101 at 102.5“.

More info at the Columbus Dispatch.

Original Post 6/26/10: A move of Columbus, OH’s Alternative “CD101” WWCD appears to be on the horizon. A pair of domain registrations hint at a new frequency for the longtime independently owned station. CD101at1025.com and CD1025.com were both registered anonymously but pointing to the servers of the Columbus area ISP that host WWCD’s online operations.

102.5 is WCVZ Baltimore, OH, which moved into the Columbus market last year and has been running an automated Country format as “Highway 102”.

101.1 WWCD is licensed to Grove City, OH and is a Class A with 6kw at 328 feet, while 102.5 WCVZ is a Class B1 operating with 15kw at 427 feet.

It’s a nice little upgrade for CD101 moving from a Class A southwest-skewing signal for a more powerful southeast-skewing one. I wonder what will replace the alternative format on 101.1?
