Virginia Tech University is expanding its statewide Public News/Talk “Radio IQ” network in the Richmond market with the acquisition of 89.7 WNVU Charles City from Educational Media Foundation.
The $2.15 million purchase will give Virginia Tech a full-powered signal in the Richmond market to accompany their 92.5 W223AZ Richmond. WNVU had been running the Spanish Christian “Radio Nueva Vida” network since EMF acquired 98.9 WLFV Midlothian and 100.3 WARV-FM Petersburg from Alpha Media to become the primary “K-Love” affiliates in the market in 2017.
By becoming part of the “Radio IQ” network based at 89.1 WVTF Roanoke, WNVU will join the recently rebranded “VPM News” 88.9 WCVE-FM Richmond in airing Public News/Talk programming in the Richmond market. The Richmond based station also runs a Classical service on 107.3 WBBT Powhatan/Richmond and 93.1 WWLB Ettrick/Petersburg.

Richmond is another market where several commercial stations with mainstream formats are now gone. Replaced with either religious or news/talk. Is this the future of radio? Remember when it used to be a battle for CHR or Country?
