Audacy Variety Hits “98.9 The Buzz” WBZA Rochester NY morning host Scott Spezzano will retire from mornings at the station on Friday, December 18th.
Spezzano has been teamed with Sandy Waters since 1999 first on CHR 97.9 WPXY before moving to co-owned WBZA in September 2014. His 50 year broadcast career that started at the age of fifteen, dates even longer in Rochester with time at Rock “Majic 92” turned CHR “Q92” WMJQ before moving to WPXY in the mid 80s.
Spezzano wrote, “I started doing this when I was a kid. And somehow, while I was busy
coming in every morning and doing another show, 50 years happened. I’ve gotten married. I’ve become a dad. I’ve made friendships that will last the rest of my life. And I’ve had generations of people come up to me and say, “I listened to you when I was a kid,” which, by the way, is a horrifying thing to hear when you’re trying to convince yourself you’re still 38. And lately I’ve been hearing a lot of those stories. That’s when you realize this wasn’t just a job. You guys were living your lives while we were doing ours on the radio. You drove to work with us. You took your kids to school with us. You laughed with us. Sometimes you yelled at us. Sometimes you called to tell us we were idiots – and occasionally you were correct. So I’m not going to make this a funeral. I’m still here. In fact, I did the math. Starting today, we’ve got about 57 shows left together. And I want those 57 shows to be fun. I want to tell some stories. I want to bring back some things we’ve forgotten about. I want to hear some of your memories. I want to laugh a lot. And I’m sure somewhere along the way I’m going to get emotional despite my very best efforts not to. As for what’s next? I don’t completely know yet. And for probably the first time in my adult life, I’m actually okay saying that. I’m not retiring. I’m not disappearing. I’m just closing one really big chapter and figuring out what the next one looks like. We’ll have plenty of time between now and December 18th to talk about all of this.”
Waters will continue in mornings following Spezzano’s retirement.
