On the heels of the launch of “Great Country 93.7” WSJR Wilkes-Barre, PA this morning, Cumulus flipped CHR “Channel 104.9” WKOS Kingsport, TN to “Great Country 104.9” at 1:04pm today.
WKOS has seen a number of formats over the past few years; Variety Hits “104.9 The Peak“, Hot AC “104-9 KOS“, and most recently CHR “Channel 104.9“. Cumulus’ stations are embargoed from release of their ratings due to not subscribing to the local book, however WKOS is now up against Bristol Broadcasting’s market dominating 96.9 WXBQ, which registered a 22.4 share in the Fall 2011 ratings.
Working against WKOS is its in-market signal. The 2.75kW signal is not strong in the Johnson City portion of the Tri-Cities while WXBQ is a 75kW Class C.
Could Cumulus Media flip WMOS-102.3 in Southeastern Connecticut (currently a classic rock station operated in partnership with and studios located at the Mohegan Sun casino) to “Great Country 102.3”, although it would place it head-to-head against the area’s current (and presumably quite successful) country station, WCTY-97.7??
Logic says “no”, but given what they did in Kingsport, I wonder…….
