Growing Pains

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta

RadioInsight Server Outage Issues Over the past few weeks we’ve had some difficulties with our web-hosting provider that has led to prolonged site outages. Our nearly sixteen hour outage on Friday for issues on their end that they have yet to be able to explain the cause of was the final straw.

As RadioInsight and our family of sites have continued to grow we are very grateful for the loyalty of our readers. Any outage of less than one minute is as totally unacceptable as what happened on Friday. We thank you so much for your patience over the past few weeks as we hopefully put these issues into the rear view.

The web hosting world is full of peaks and valleys. There are tons of quality hosts available on the low end for those that need something basic and there are many great providers at the high end. Unfortunately for sites like ours that exist in the middle the options are less scarce. Our average stay on a hosting provider has been around nine months as our rapid traffic growth and inability to find a provider with quality customer service keeps rearing its ugly head.

After years of trying to make things go on a shared server with as many tweaks and CDN additions to help share the load, we’ve simply outgrown that existence. So now we have made the move for the first time to a dedicated server. Once we eliminate any potential hiccups that come across anytime you make a server move it should be smooth sailing from here. We’re no longer at the mercy of whatever other accounts may be arbitrarily sharing resources with us, or limitations put on by the hosting company. BTW, if you want to carve your own niche it’s time to disrupt the mid-level hosting market. Computing prices are dropping but hosting is going the other way. Find a way to give mid-level sites the resources they need at a price point that makes sense.

With our server issues now in the past we will now be able to dedicate more time to our continued growth. In the coming days we will be publishing a survey to find out what you all would like to see more of on the site. As always comments are always appreciated through the contact link at the top of the page. I once again thank you all for your continued patronage of RadioInsight, and we will continue to strive to keep getting bigger and better in 2015!

Completely hear you on hosting. One host we’ve been with for awhile told us less than a month before our renewal that their rates were tripling for us.

On to the next hosting company….

Partially. FormatChange.com is run strictly as a hobby. With RadioInsight and some of my revenue generating side businesses taking up more time, I have less time to edit airchecks and post them on the site.
