Update 12/13: WZMR is currently stunting with sounds of a guy hiking up a “Peak” as it prepares to launch its AAA format later today.
In announcing the new format, WZMR reveals that former Urban “Hot 99.1” W256BU/WQSH-HD2 PD Jamie ‘Tanch’ Tanchyk will program and host middays on The Peak. The new format is based on the format of sister “107.1 The Peak” WXPK in the northern New York City suburbs.
A brand new radio station is now broadcasting on Capital Region airwaves. Listeners can hear an eclectic variety of contemporary / classic rock, alternative and pop music on WZMR, 104.9 “The Peak”. The station’s official format is AAA (Adult Album Alternative), and will feature local air talent during the week, headlined by midday personality and station Program Director, Jamie “Tanch” Tanchyk.
“The Peak” fills the 104.9 frequency void as its former occupant, country station, “The Cat”, has moved to 100.9, taking over the WKLI call letters. In addition to WZMR, WKLI, WFLY and WAJZ, Albany Broadcasting also owns Adult Contemporary, WYJB – B95.5 and Oldies, WROW – Magic 590AM.
The Peak’s playlist showcases four decades of music. The station will blend album cuts from established bands like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, and Red Hot Chili Peppers with new releases from bands like Arcade Fire, Fitz & The Tantrums, Frank Turner, Cage The Elephant, Lorde, Avicci and Imagine Dragons.
The station is currently playing all music, with jocks expected to debut in early January 2014.
Original Report 11/15: Since Country “104.9 The Cat” relocated to 100.9 WKLI Albany in October, there has been no sign of what Pamal Broadcasting’s plans for the soon-to-be vacant 104.9 WZMR Altamont will be.
That has changed as Pamal registered 1049ThePeak.com for the station yesterday. Pamal currently uses the Peak branding at AAA 107.1 WXPK Briarcliff Manor in the northern suburbs of New York City. Will the new Albany station duplicate that format or possibly head in a more Alternative direction?
Pamal hired Tanch, PD of crosstown Urban “Hot 99.1” W256BU/WQSH-HD2 earlier this month for a role with the soon to launch format.
