iHeartMedia AAAs In Fort Collins & Temecula Move To Alternative

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
January 28, 2020

Radio 94.5 KMYT Temecula 94.9 Fort CollinsFollowing the programming strategy and staff changes made across the company earlier this month, some of the overriding changes at some niche formats have become noticeable.

With music scheduling moving to the corporate level, niche formats at small and medium markets became most likely to be prone to changes and that is especially the case with the AAA format. To that end, that has been the case at “Radio 94.5” KMYT Temecula CA and “Radio 94.9” K235BT/KSME-HD2 Fort Collins CO as both stations are now running the national Alternative music logs and voicetrackers.

K235BT launched as AAA in May 2013, with KMYT following suit in August 2014. The change at K235BT puts it in direct format competition with Townsquare Media’s “94.3 The X” KMAX-FM Wellington/Fort Collins. KMAX-FM had a 0.9 share in the Fall 2019 Nielsen Audio ratings, while K235BT had a 0.4 share.

The changes leave 97.3 KBCO Denver as the only AAA in the company’s portfolio.

Isn’t KTCZ considered to be AAA again these days?

I was wondering that, too. I know it’s had an identity crisis the last few years, but now it sounds most like AAA to me. Of course, positioning is 9/10 of the rule, and it may present itself to the trades as something different.

KTCZ reports as a Hot AC. Too much pop crossover to be considered AAA.
