Pacific Media Group flipped Alternative “Alt 105.9” KPOI-FM Honolulu to Soft AC “105.9 The Wave”
The station is now positioning as “Relaxing Favorites” with a playlist heavy on 1980s ballads. Considering its location in Hawaii, the station is playing one Hawaiian artist every other hour. The new format places KPOI-FM in direct competition with iHeartMedia’s 590 KSSK/92.3 KSSK-FM and SummitMedia’s “Krater 96.3” KRTR-FM.
KPOI had featured some variant of Rock music since its sign-on in 2000 with stints as Active Rock, Classic Rock and since 2014 Alternative.
One of two Alternative stations in the Honolulu market, KPOI-FM registered a mere 1.4 share in the March Nielsen Audio monthly. iHeartMedia’s competing “Star 101.9” KUCD had a 2.2. KSSK led the market with a 12.0 share.
The first hour of “105.9 The Wave” consisted of:
- DNA ft. Suzanne Vega – Tom’s Diner
- Breathe – Hands To Heaven
- Air Supply – Even The Nights Are Better
- Pink – A Million Dreams
- John Lennon – Imagine
- Selena – Dreaming of You
- U2 – I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For
- Bruce Hornsby and The Range – The Way it Is
- Nelly Furtado – Say It Right
- Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight
