Longtime WGN Chicago personality Orion Samuelson passed away today at the age of 91.

Samuelson spent 60 years at WGN from 1960 until retiring in 2020. He began his career at WKLJ Sparta WI and later worked as Program Director of WHBY Appleton and Farm Director of WBAY and WBAY-TV Green Bay before joining WGN. Samuelson would become the best-known agricultural broadcaster in the country at WGN between his daily farm reports and weekly commentary later syndicated as the National Farm Report. He also hosted and produced the U.S. Farm Report television series. Samuelson was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2003.

WGN Radio VP/General Manager Mary Boyle said, “Orion Samuelson’s name resonates very much like his signature voice. It’s difficult to articulate the significance of his broadcasting career. While he was the farmer’s champion to be sure, his uniquely informative, friendly style developed broad rapport with everyday listeners as well. A sixty year relationship with the WGN Radio audience educating us on many things, among them, if you eat, you’re involved in agriculture. A consummate gentleman with an inspirational work ethic, equally at ease with kids in a 4-H competition or presidents. Meeting and working with Orion is a privilege I will forever hold dear.”
