‘Weather Dave’ Aiken Exits WKRR & Two Guys Named Chris

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
August 1, 2024

Weather Dave Aiken 2 Guys Named Chris Rock 92 WKRR GreensboroAmidst a round of significant layoffs at Dick Broadcasting, ‘Weather Dave’ Aiken has exited as co-host of the syndicated 2 Guys Named Chris morning show and APD/MD/afternoon host at Classic Rock “Rock 92” WKRR Greensboro NC.

Aiken had been with WKRR since 2003. He also held roles over the past two decades in creative services, promotions and event planning, the last in which he was co-founder and chair of the Summertime Brews Festival from 2005 to 2019. Prior to joining the station he spent eleven years as a meteorologist for WFMY-TV Greensboro from 1991 to 2002 and has served as a freelance meteorologist for WXII-TV since 2015.

On the morning show today, host Chris Kelly tearfully said, “Yesterday, we had a very bad day here, a lot of good people lost their job yesterday. And on of them is Dave Aiken. Dave is fine, this is not a funeral, we did not know that was going to happen until yesterday so it was a really tough time for us. I really didn’t expect to be emotional about this but. He has been such a major part of our team for twenty years so that’s a really hard thing for us to go through. He’s not going to be here anymore and we didn’t get a chance to say how much we appreciate him.”

We have confirmed additional cuts Dick’s clusters across its footprint in Greensboro, Myrtle Beach SC, New Bern NC, and Savannah GA, however none of the names have gone public yet.

I understand that radio is a “business” but maybe we can lay off some of these “leaders” that hurt morning shows with these layoffs…the same shows that they probably haven’t heard a second of. Good riddance, radio is doing it to itself. If you are a “boss” in radio and reading this, I am talking abut you. Good riddance.

Gonna miss weather Dave. He was a very important link in the chain that made the morning show. I said many times that whoever put Chris, Chris and Biggie and weather Dave together sure knew what they were doing, cause you guys work so well together, now the chain is broken, an important link is missing. I think whoever made the decision to let weather Dave go should rethink their decision and get him back on the show ASAP. Make budget cuts some other way.

I completely agree! I moved to NC recently from the Chicago area and found this radio station, which has helped me ease into the NC lifestyle. I have been listening every morning to the “Two guys named Chris show” and absolutely love them ALL as a team. This show has so much to offer to a wide range of listeners. In my opinion, Dave Aiken is a huge part of the team’s success and is a complete “value add”. Dave is the side kick that completes the team. I have turned so many of my friends and colleagues onto this morning show, I now feel like I have defrauded my friends. I have witnessed so many Chicago morning programs go down hill and burn because of this “corporate decision” and they never bounce back.
Please reconsider your decision regarding letting Dave Aiken go. You always get what you pay for and he is well worth keeping the team together.

        Sincere regards,
        Chicago Kimberly

I think that the powers that be have grossly under estimated his value on the show. I think if layoffs were needed they needed to look at the marketing and sales team who weren’t doing their jobs to get the sponsors and events put back on since covid. Dave offered a great balance between Demm and Kelly, the working relationship with Biggie was also excellent. I really hope that they reconsider this move because it’s a big mistake. Dave and the listeners deserve better!

Bring Dave Aiken back! He is so important to the show, brings a great balance between Chris and Chris, and has such a great sense of humor. Rock 92 has been my only station for over 30 years and I’ve listened to the show since it’s start, never better than when Dave Like joined the team. Big mistake from the corporate powers.

Well, I’m not a sponsor. But I’m an almost 20 year listener. As a 42 year old, I started listening to 2GNC at a time that wasn’t “cool” for my bracket. The DJs including weather Dave kept me coming back. Dave brought relatable realistic perspectives to so many. Mud on the face to those who blindsided a beloved member of a team that kept a wide variety of listeners engaged. This apparent unilateral upper management decision is an illustration of an overeducated, self proclaimed cruncher of numbers making poor uninformed decisions. Money talks, and money walks. Maybe folks making the time to support 2gnc with our beloved Weather Dave will prompt a reconsideration by the unemotional, behind the curtain decision makers. Do better. Be better.

I have been listening for years and Weather Dave has always been one of my favorites. I agree with all of the comments above. Why break up a winning combination of those four guys. With so many more radio shows around to listen to, the corporate powers made a bad mistake. I am sure there are other ways to budget cut- like get rid of Bibi Shay. I believe some listeners will stop listening to the station and I may be one of them. Dave has a great sense of humor and a great laugh. He brought some sense and class to the show.

Whomever this move was run by is a total moron and so far removed from their listeners that they should find new work.

Hey hey now! What’s going on with the powers that be making such an awful decision to let weather Dave go? This will not in any way benefit the show or your listeners. I’m 68 and have been listening from the beginning when coworkers told me about a new classic rock radio station.
Honestly it doesn’t make sense to break up such a great team, the team and the talent that have made the show what it is.
I understand in this time of corporate greed that the rich have to get richer but this is like shooting yourself in the foot or as the old saying goes to cut off your nose to spite your face.
You really should reconsider this decision and bring Dave back, if he would even come back.
But I’m sure he knows we the listeners are on his side.
    Miss his laugh already!

I have listened to Rock 92 for 20 plus years and I’ve listened every day for the past 7 years. I pay for the P1 subscription because the four guys are great together and I never want to miss an episode but now that y’all have taken one of the key players (Dave Aiken) out of this show is destined to fail because of the lack of transparency an loyalty that dick prodcasting gave to Dave. Dave is all P1 favorite person he is very knowledgeable and gives the audience a good laugh and he has a place in our heart the fact that y’all Layed him off due to budget is doing nothing but pissing all the listeners off because we are what is important to the radio organization and like most organizations they do not care about their audience Davie is compassionate about everything he talks about he will be miss to all the p1 listeners.

Been listening to the show for many years, a d like so many have said already “why fix it if it ain’t broken”. The chemistry between all 4 is what makes the show so special. It is honestly the only radio show I listen to in the mornings and will definitely not be the same. I really do not want to listen to john boy and billy repeat the same shows over and over. Bring weather Dave back. He completes you….

The news of this has really broken me up. I met Dave at a Buffett show about 20 years ago, and we have talked briefly (mostly in bars around Greensboro, lol) several times. I know him as an honest and good man. Dick Broadcasting has made a mistake. I listen to 2GNC everyday and now I don’t know if I will now.

Big mistake. Dave is integral to the show. Demm likely to retire in a few years and Dave could have stepped in to fill his spot. Advertisers should take note and consider pulling out which will be the coup de grace (blow of mercy) to the whole deal. I hope he finds good work with someone else – they will have an excellent worker if they on-board him.

Dave was 75% of why I loved the show so much. He is witty, quick, unabashed and also a very considerate and kind personality, he really did “tie the show together”. Bring Dave back!!!!! I was heartbroken and disgusted he was let go so abruptly, I haven’t been able to listen since, Kelly and BB Shay do not have the same chemistry and the powers that be have pushed the show into the mundane.

I wonder if any research was done prior to the cull? DAVE A is a HUGE part of the 2 Guys Named Chris Show. Truly, won’t be the same. Chris n Chris are good. Biggie makes em better. Dave puts em over the top to a fantastic morning show. DICK Broadcasting is rolling the dice they won’t lose share. As a P1 I’m already on the fence about keeping WKRR on my faves button. Kelly n BB Shea have been flat these past 2 mornimgs. No offense intended to either of these personalities but the show’s energy just isn’t there. I hope DICK can swallow their pride and bring Dave back. Best wishes to Demm n Biggs to get over their “covid”. Take as much time as u need to get better.

Big mistake. Obviously you can’t cut one of the Chris’s that would be too much. Then you can’t cut Biggie because he produces. So that comes to Dave or Bibi Shay (or however you spell it). We can guess who had the higher salary between those two. So you chopped the bigger salary but I think you have hurt the overall product too much to recover. Let’s be honest target audience is not the younger demo, so Dave is more relatable to the demographic you need to attract and keep. Business is business nothing personal but doesn’t feel very loyal (without knowing any of the background details), you really destroyed the chemistry that took years to build. Hard to imagine new radio shows being assembled this day and age, so seems logical you would try and keep together the best product you can to run for as long as possible. Maybe we are at the end of radio………..start looking for new “AI” shows coming soon

Sad to hear about this. He’s been with you guys for many years. He will be missed on the morning show but at least he has his other job on Channel 12 WXII. Good luck Dave.

I can’t agree enough with the comments above. I’m not even in this station’s target demographic as I’m probably younger than most so don’t listen to this kind of music, but I loved the chemistry with these guys and listened daily. Not sure, how this will all work out.

I’m P1 from Day one already found me a new station. I hope after the sponsors leave the show evidently upper management don’t know a good thing when they got it replace Dave Aiken with BB Shay. I’m done.
