Following last week’s iHeartMedia cuts, rumors have been swirling about the status of Rock 94.1 WHJY Providence RI morning hosts Paul Fuller and ‘Al Michaels’ Milukas.
The duo debuted in mornings on WHJY on July 15, 1990 and will be celebrating their 36th anniversary on the station later this month. Former WHJY afternoon host Geoff Charles claimed earlier this week that the duo were fired by iHeart although their final show will be on September 1. While nobody at iHeart will comment one way or another, Matthews told WJAR-TV that he could not comment on the reports, but to keep listening.
Former “Cat Country 98.1” WCTK morning host Brian Mulhern, whose brother Kevin has served as Paul & Al’s producer for over two decades, rebuked the report of the duo being fired and instead noted that they will be retiring on their own accord, which matches what we’ve heard as well. He wrote, “For the record (and I’ve intentionally remained quiet on this for over a week). Paul and Al aren’t “losing their gigs.” They aren’t “being fired.” They were retiring all along, and aren’t losing so much as even one penny as a result. Appreciate, and respect, their remarkable legacy — and what they’ve brought for 36 years to Providence radio, AND the industry. Sure, I’m a bitter pr*ck in regard to the overall state of the biz. But unlike others, I would NEVER spread misinformation to suit how my own journey came to an end. Congrats to these guys, for all they’ve accomplished. Long before I hit the airwaves, I listened to, and respected what they brought to the table. They were both worthy competitiors, and an influence. And I’ll forever love them for what they’ve also done for my little brother. Celebrate this. Don’t wring your hands. So many of us only wish it had ended in exactly the same way.”
Fuller and Milukas were first teamed together in 1987 at CHR 97.5 WABB Mobile AL prior to joining WHJY.
