Rogers Sports & Media has announced it will shut down six spoken word station across Canada including two each in Vancouver and Calgary.
Rogers will shut down “Sportsnet 650” CISL and “News Radio 1130” CKWX Vancouver, “News Radio 660” CFFR and “Sportsnet 960” CFAC Calgary, “News Radio 95.7” CJNI-FM Halifax NS and “News Radio 570” CKGL Kitchener ON. It will leave Rogers’ “680 News” CFTR and “Sportsnet 590 The Fan” CJCL Toronto as the company’s only spoken word stations.
Rogers told Broadcast Dialogue that the licenses for the six stations will be returned to the CRTC. The report notes that Vancouver Canucks hockey will move to another Rogers owned station in Vancouver, but the company will stop producing Calgary Flames games.
The moves come with 230 jobs being eliminated in the company, which Broadcast Dialogue says includes 80 from the affected stations. Others include corporate and support roles across sales, marketing, and programming, in addition to primarily production and some on-air roles on the television side.
A Rogers spokesperson said, “The media business continues to face headwinds driven by declining advertising revenue and changing audience habits. These changes are part of our plan to focus our investment in areas that will drive growth long-term. After a thorough review of our radio stations, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close six radio stations in four markets due to declining audience and revenue trends — we continue to own and operate 44 radio stations in nearly 30 communities across the country and to invest in local news in the impacted markets.”
