Looks like CBS will end the WIP AM and FM simulcast as it puts the new sports talk network on AM.
When Citadel (since acquired by Cumulus) acquired the ABC owned radio stations, Disney held onto ESPN Radio and its ESPN stations. Now Cumulus is going head to head with ESPN and with Clear Channel’s Fox Sports Radio network.
All this seems to suggest (yet again) that the suits have decided sports talk is the only format that they can sell these days, even with miniscule ratings numbers.
Sad that WXYT (previously WXYZ) will become a computer in a closet taking syndicated sports talk. Wixie pioneered Top 40 with some of the great rock jocks of all time. Before that, during radio’s Golden Age, it was the station that produced The Lone Ranger, Challenge of the Yukon (Sgt. Preston) and The Green Hornet.
