Tom Joyner Loses Dallas Flagship

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
November 18, 2014

Tom Joyner Morning Show 94.5 KSoul K-Soul KSOC Boom Dallas DFWLost in the original hubbub of Radio-One flipping 94.5 KSOC Dallas to Classic Hip-Hop “Boom 94.5” is that the syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show is no longer available in its home market.

Joyner has been a mainstay of the Dallas radio landscape since beginning in mornings at Service Broadcasting’s “K104” KKDA-FM in 1985. That’s when Joyner became “The Fly Jock” as he would then fly daily to Chicago to then host afternoons at 107.5 WGCI, a roundtrip he would make daily for eight years.

In the press release announcing the format change, Radio-One Dallas VP/General Manager Gary Spurgeon stated, “Transitioning employees is always difficult. We’ve taken every step to ensure our employees are treated fairly and with respect. As for Tom, he’s an icon and consummate professional that understands our format change and looks forward to partying with his Dallas listeners on his digital platforms.”

“Partying with his Dallas listeners on his digital platforms”. Sounds like they have him under contract for awhile. Wonder how long before he can cross the street to another station.

Joyner really cant go anywhere in D/FW now unless someone is flipping to Urban AC anytime soon. KRNB is tied in to Harvey. I guess the only way would for Radio One to buy 620 am and put Joyner on that stick for mornings, and maybe do some hybrid gospel/urban ac/black talk station.
