A bit more from the Herald which says that there are no plans to sell the stations and they will keep running but they
need a half million dollars to re-structure; the debt of $10 million or so is partially due to the "debt service" including
the original purchase of two stations from Charles River Broadcasting. Add the declining ad market to that, according to
Michael Harrison, and you have a good idea of "the plight" local radio can face.

Acc. to the Boston Business Journal, Sandab/Cape Cod Broadcasting owed $6.5 million to M&T bank, based in Baltimore, and $3.5 million to Charles River Broadcasting --who sold WFCC and WKPE to Sandab 2 years ago.

http://boston.bizjournals.com/boston/stories/2009/09/21/daily55.html

Bob Bittner has also mentioned "Cape Cod is over-radio-ed"

You mention WGBH poss. buying WFCC; but what about buying WQRC which covers southeast of Boston well? (I think L. Glavin mentioned that). Plus it would be right next to CRB on the dial--when you're heading to the Cape and CRB fades, tune a bit to the right. (The AC format could migrate to 107.5).

A major problem might be the Cape Cod market itself.

As recently as 1970, there were only five stations on the entire Cape (WOCB-1240 and WOCB-94.9 in West Yarmouth; now WBUR and WXTK at 95.1 respectively, WCOD-106.1, WQRC-99.9 and WCIB-101.9; the latter having signed-on that August).

While the population of the Cape has grown since 1970, I don't think it's grown enough to support (including WMVY-92.7 on Martha's Vineyard) ten commercial radio stations.

And the big-signal Boston stations, especially on the western portion of the Cape (from Hyannis west towards Falmouth and the Canal) probably attract a lot of Cape listeners.

I could see WGBH making a cheap bid for WFCC-107.5 to use it to simulcast WCRB-99.5 (which it will soon own) on Cape Cod and extreme Southeastern Massachusetts.

But who would buy the others??

My guess: Whoever does may turn those stations into 24/7 birdfeed, or, if such owner has stations in Boston, to a 24/7 simulcast of their Boston stations. <img src="http://radioinsight.com/boards/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_cry.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" />

(And WQRC had the best local radio news on the Cape, and that will likely go away)
I wonder if Entercom is pressuring (or will soon start to put pressure on) stations outside of Boston that if they want to carry the Red Sox or the Celtics, they'll have to carry the full 24/7 schedule of the WEEI Sports Radio Network.

The format switch should happen on or around April 1. They say that they will be able to reach 13 of 17 Arbitron-rated New
England markets with this move.

The powerful signal will reach all of Cape Cod and the Islands plus Plymouth County. Currently Red Sox and Celtics broadcasts
are on W. Yarmouth's WXTK 95.1

A post on boston-radio-interest by Scott Fybush mentions that today WRZE 96.3 issued a press
release saying they will simulcast WEEI starting in April, as WEII.
They're licensed to Dennis and here is their signal range (approx.)
I do remember at least one station trying country. One person told me WCIB 101.9 was country for awhile, and someone else said the
93.5/101.1 combo was country for six months or so

I was just down there; the competition, 98.1, has a good signal
even on the Cape but 103.9 is urging listeners to try them out so
they won't have to listen to "a faraway station"
