Alpha Media launched “Chicagoland’s Free Country” on 98.3 WCCQ Crest Hill/Joliet and 102.3 WXLC Waukegan, with the latter flipping from Hot AC “Star 102.3“.
As we first hinted about in the story about the layoffs at the company’s Joliet IL cluster last week, the flip creates an in-market competitor to Audacy’s “US 99” WUSN for the first time since iHeartMedia flipped “Big 95.5” to Rock in September 2020.
Joining the station as Assistant Content Director/Music Director and afternoon host is Drew Walker. Walker departed middays at Audacy’s “US 99” WUSN earlier this month after a 20 year run. Walker stated, “I am elated to be part of Free Country 98.3 and 102.3. What an incredible opportunity to bring the best country music to even more fans across all of Chicagoland. The team at Alpha Media is truly special, let’s go!”
The remainder of the lineup will be led by Premiere Networks’ Bobby Bones Show in mornings. Hannah Brummer moves from co-hosting afternoons with Eddie Volkman on the three “Star” branded Hot ACs to host middays. Skyview Networks’ “B-Dub Radio” hosted by Bryan Washington will be heard in nights.
Alpha Media Chicago Region Vice President Brian Foster commented, “I am in awe of the energy, creativity, and ingenuity our team has shown over the past few weeks. Buckle up, we are about to go on a very exciting ride. Feel ‘free’ to give us a listen!”
Phil Becker, EVP of Content for Alpha Media, emphasized the unique advantages of radio in today’s media landscape. “Radio’s greatest benefit is often overlooked – it’s completely free. Free to listen, free to win, and free to subscribe. While streaming services and tech companies are charging for music and content, Free Country at 98.3 and 102.3 is dedicated to providing Country music and fan experiences to Chicagoans at no cost.”
The flip ends 40+ years of Pop music on WXLC dating back to its early 1980’s flip to Top 40. Alpha had rebranded the station as “Star 102.3” last May as it regionalized morning and afternoon shows on its three Chicagoland Hot ACs. The other two “Star” branded stations; “Star 96.7” WSSR Joliet and “Star 105.5” WZSR Crystal Lake continue as-is.
