Longtime 106.7 KROQ Los Angeles personality Edwin ‘Jed The Fish’ Jed Fish Gould III passed away on Monday April 14 at the age of 69 after a battle with lung cancer.
After starting his career at stations including KPIN, KORG, KEZY and KIQQ, Gould spent the majority of his career at KROQ from 1978 to 2012 in afternoons. He briefly departed in the 1980s spending time at KQAK and KRQR San Francisco before returning. After exiting KROQ, Gould hosted a show at AAA 88.5 KCSN San Fernando before joining New Wave “Roq of the 80s” KROQ-HD2 in 2019. He also hosted the syndicated weekend Alternative “countdown” show Out of Order from 1994 to 2013.
KROQ evening host Megan Holiday told Variety, “He is one of the kindest, funniest and the most unique people that I’ve ever met. He was so inspiring and endlessly creative, and he had an infectious energy. He could light up an arena. I just loved him very much and was grateful for the time we got to spend together.”
In describing his time at KROQ on LinkedIn, Jed wrote, “My decades at KROQ are the core of my radio experience. Right place at the right time. We were leading the way but had no idea. Looking back, it’s plain the influence of this powerhouse reached beyond radio. TV, movies and now the sorts of attitudes and intensities displayed online owe much of their processes to KROQ. I just realized that as profound as the KHJ legacy is, it did not span generations. Any music lover who grew up in SoCal will tell you KROQ was their buddy for much or most of their lives. You can tell I now take pride in what I did. But I really tried not to while I was doing it. When I was younger, and my name was not on a guest list, that was always my little test. Was I going to be that guy? Also, be warned: if you want a hands-off boss, and get your wish, there may come a rough time when a pat on the back is just not there. I did have some terse and morally contradictory episodes at KROQ, but I was treated well by executives and colleagues alike. I found very little feedback would stick in my head better than the other way. Kevin Weatherly helped me be a better me. This vast experience raced by like all good things. Driving to work, at least 10 times a month, I would remember how lucky I was; that this could all be over any minute. Like the end of the Sopranos.”
