FCC Applications 2/20

Lance Ventaby Lance Venta
February 20, 2014

FCC Update Translator Construction Permit ApplicationsEntercom Urban AC “96.3 RNB” K242CC Austin has applied to downgrade from 250 watts at 392.8 meters to 99 watts at 342 meters with a frequency shift to 95.9. While not mentioned in the application, the downgrade appears connected to the recent CP granted for a new full powered FM on 96.3 in Giddings, TX. The Class A signal will rimshot the eastern parts of the Austin market.

The southern half of Univision’s “Maxima” simulcast in Chicago is moving closer to the city itself. 93.5 WVIX Lemont has applied to relocate to the tower of EMF’s 94.3 WJKL Glendale Heights due west of Chicago where it will operate with 3kW at 100 meters.

Cox has acquired a pair of translator CP’s in the Tampa area from Circuitwerkes for $187,950. 97.1 W246CY Bradenton and 102.5 W273CP New Port Richey are both located on the same channel as Cox owned stations in the Tampa market (97.1 WSUN Holiday and 102.5 WHPT Sarasota respectively).

Radio Training Network’s “The Joy-FM 93.3” WVFJ-FM Greenville, GA is once again attempting to upgrade from a Class C1 to C0. Currently licensed to Manchester with 27kW at 491 meters, the station had a CP which has lapsed to upgrade to 38kW from the same tower. Now the station seeks to increase power to 57kW from that location.

Curtis Media’s Eastern Airwaves was both buying and selling in North Carolina this week. Incoming is 104.3 W282BX Tramway from Rudolph Holland for $10,000. The 19 watt CP is currently set to rebroadcast 107.9 WDSG-LP Sanford. Leaving the Eastern portfolio is the CP for 94.3 W232CI Fayetteville. Beasley Broadcasting is paying $75,000 for the 30 watt translator which will be used to rebroadcast 99.1 WZFX-HD2. The sale makes a nice turnaround for Curtis who paid $47,500 for it in May 2013.

University of Northwestern-St. Paul seeks to relocate its recently granted 104.7 W284CK Fort Myers, FL to 104.5. The translator will rebroadcast an HD subchannel of Clear Channel’s 95.3 WOLZ Fort Myers with 250 watts at 105 meters.

Community Broadcasting has filed to boost 102.3 K272FD Del City, OK from 99 watts at 207.3 meters to 215 watts at 164 meters, placing the signal closer to Oklahoma City. The translator will rebroadcast Community’s Christian Preaching 800 KQCV Oklahoma City.

Thanks to its tower location on the mountains nearby, Holston Valley Broadcasting’s 97.7 W249AH Johnson City, TN already covers decent ground with its 40 watts. Now the translator seeks to boost that to 250 watts from its current tower location. W249AH currently serves as the FM half of the Johnson City portion of the “ESPN Tri-Cities” network rebroadcasting 1590 WKTP Jonesborough, but will change to an HD subchannel of 98.5 WTFM Kingsport following the upgrade.

Edgewater Broadcasting’s 94.1 W231CL Wilmington, NC has applied to upgrade from 80 to 250 watts. The translator’s originating station will shift from EMF’s 88.9 WKVC North Myrtle Beach, SC to Southern Gospel 1340 WLSG Wilmington.

Only one new translator was granted this week. Circuitwerkes gained 93.7 W229CA Orlando, which will operate with 155 watts at 32.7 meters. The translator is currently licensed to rebroadcast Sports “CBS Sports 810” WRSO Orlovista.

Actually it was Cox that let a related construction permit lapse in the WVFJ situation. They petitioned the FCC and were granted the permit to upgrade to C0 already. They are already using the 38kw CP already granted. The Upgrade would allow them to to add 29kw to the power they using now.
